With hundreds of donations and gifts, the fourth annual Give to Win event, hosted by The Explorer Newspaper and Tucson Local Media was a success.The gifts were taken to Interfaith Community Services for distribution last week before Christmas. Shelley Shelton, a spokeswoman for ICS, said with all the donations this year, they were able to help more than 128 families in Southern Arizona.As part of the Give to Win event, The Explorer also gave away an iPad in the annual raffle.This year, The Explorer was also able to give more prizes, with gift cards donated by Kalina Russian Cuisine, The Hog Pit Smokehouse, Tucson Tamale Company and Gio Taco.

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 donated two tandem bikes valued at $3,000 to the Southwestern Blind Rehabilitation Center of the Tucson VA medical facility. The presentation was made at a luncheon hosted by the Lodge for 17 disabled veterans and five staff members. Catalina Mountain and San Manuel lodges sold raffle tickets for a gift generously donated by Catalina Marina to help raise funds to purchase the bikes at a discount from Trek Bicycles of Tucson – Oro Valley.

The Southern Arizona Salsa and Tequila Challenge has shaken up the summers in Tucson for three years, bringing the region’s cultural garden to modern day tastes buds. The culinary event brings up to 50 chefs and restaurants preparing unique salsa recipes and mixologists creating innovative tequila-based drinks along with sweet and savory menu pairings. The Academy for Cancer Wellness will hold its 12th annual Music and Memories concert and silent auction at 6:15 p.m Saturday, May 10 at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St., Tucson to benefit its Under-Insured Cancer Patients Endowment Fund. The program will feature performances by members of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and more, performing music by a variety of composers including Schubert, Dvořák and Schumann.
For many years, triathletes in Tucson had one local race series, Tri Tucson, at which to hone their competition skills in all three disciplines. Race Director Julie Stark, owner of On Your Left Fitness, recognized the demand for more quality triathlons in the Old Pueblo and on April 5, she launched the first Oro Valley Sprint Triathlon.
