Two area wrestlers won their weight classes at Flowing Wells Invitational, annually one of the one of the toughest wrestling tournaments in the state.
Seven area athletes signed to play baseball or softball with Pima College on Thursday. They were part of a group of 25 athletes to at the Pima District Office on Thursday to formally sign their commitments for the 2016 season.
There is a lot written about the cost the Town might incur with the proposed purchase of the El Conquistador Club. One thing I believe is overlooked is that golf is a sport, much like baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, archery, swimming and lacrosse. The Town currently funds the upkeep and maintenance of numerous sports activities/facilities at a cost to the residents and those who use the facilities. Why should golf be any different? Golf is an excellent recreational sport for all ages, whether you are young and interested in an individual oriented sport or older and looking for exercise and companionship.

Wednesday morning was the last day of the early signing period for high school athletes to sign National Letters of Intent with four-year NCAA colleges. Five Ironwood Ridge athletes made it official with a signing day ceremony at the high school.

The Canyon Del Oro softball team has gone back to the past for their new coach. Two-time state champion Kelly Fowler returns to lead the Dorados for the third time.
Although it will not be official until the Amphi School District Governing Board meets on September 23, Kelly Fowler will return as head coach of the Canyon Del Oro softball team.

Little League softball usually takes a back seat to Little League baseball, but it is hard to argue with the track record of success at Thornydale Little League. The league based out of Arthur Pack Park has been dominant.
Thornydale Little League Softball All-Stars have a rich tradition of success when many other leagues have struggled.
Although host Thornydale was unable to win the Junior Softball All-Star West Regional, they did finish strong in the event, beating Tillamook, Oregon 16-3 in the consolation final.

Thornydale’s run at the Arizona State Little League 9/10 Softball Tournament came to an end on Sunday night. Thornydale fell 7-0 to Ponytail GSL, their second loss in the double-elimination tournaments.
The Thornydale 9-10 Softball All-Stars stayed alive in the state tournament with a 1-0 win on Saturday night.
Three days a week you will find Andy Morales at Rio Vista Elementary School. On the surface this would not seem like much of a big deal, after all he is the school’s physical education teacher, but Morales does not have any classes to teach. Technically, Morales is on summer vacation, but still comes out those three days a week to tend to various projects he has going on.
Abe Grijalva is the new Head Softball Coach at Flowing Wells.
Oro Valley resident Abe Grijalva was named the new softball coach at Flowing Wells last week. Grijalva, the longtime softball coach for Douglas High School, semi-retired to Oro Valley after 30 years at Douglas, 17 coaching softball.
