The 2014 fall sports season has come to a close for teams on the Northwest side. Multiple state titles were won, winning streaks were had and records were broken. Here are the best of the best, your All-Northwest selections.
Mountain View High School has had five former students killed in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is believed to be the most of any high school in America. This somber fact led to the construction of a veterans’ memorial in front of the school. Nov. 8, the school dedicated the monument to the five, as well as any United States military veteran.
Four area teams qualified for their respective state football playoffs. Only one of the four still had work to do in the final week of the season, but with their 37-10 win over Maricopa, Catalina Foothills wrapped up the No. 12 seed and will now visit Queen Creek. It was the fourth straight win for the Falcons, after starting 3-3 and dealing with youth and injuries.
The teams and individuals below would make state if the season ended today. Many boys teams have reached or exceeded seven contests. Since the rankings use the best seven scores, those individuals that have played eight or more have begun to drop their higher scores. This should result in lowering team and individual scores. Teams are allowed to play 14 competitions. Those that choose to play fewer will have a disadvantage.
The Canyon Del Oro softball team has gone back to the past for their new coach. Two-time state champion Kelly Fowler returns to lead the Dorados for the third time.
The current Boys Golf Rankings for 9/29/14 as calculated by CDO boys golf coach John Farbarik. Prior week email rankings are below. Many boys teams have reached or exceeded seven contests. Storms affected every football game in Southern Arizona last Friday. There was not a single game in the area that was not delayed or postponed. Two games, CDO/Ironwood Ridge and Pusch Ridge/ Scottsdale Christian did not resume that night.

The story of the week in high school sports was the return of Bridgett Doucet. The CDO senior cross country runner finished second in the state two years ago, but missed all of last season dealing with an illness. She did come back for the track season, but she served notice at least week’s Northwest Showdown that she was all the way back and a real contender for a state championship.
The AIA will not publish official boys golf rankings until 9/15. However, their formula is public and can be computed for Southern AZ teams before that date. Below are the unofficial rankings of Southern AZ teams for results played and posted by Sunday 9/7. The team with the lowest ranking in each section gets an automatic berth in their State Tournament. Eight at-large berths from non-section winners around the state will be given in each Division.
The Marana girls soccer team is excited to invite you to be a part of their annual Marana Lady Tigers Golf Tournament. On September 20th, 2014 you will enjoy a great day of golf at the beautiful Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort. The event will include a 4-person scramble, golf cart, range balls, goodie bag, fajita luncheon and awards reception to follow.
The PGA Tour announced last week that a new tournament was coming to northwest Tucson. The Tucson Classic, a PGA Champions Tour event, will be played in Tucson’s Omni Tucson National Resort between March 16 and 22, next year.
With the announcement of the PGA Champions Tour coming to Arizona, the long rumored demise of the World Golf Championships-Match Play event in Marana is finally reality.
On April 30, traffic was halted at Oracle and Magee roads as the intersection was filled with motor officers, a Pima County Regional SWAT vehicle, but it wasn’t for an emergency, it was for Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics.

Fans in 224 countries are getting a great glimpse of Marana when the Accenture Match Play Championship returns Feb. 17-23. The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is again the site of an international competition that is putting our community on the world stage for the eighth consecutive year.
