It was fun and games for Picture Rocks Intermediate and Desert Winds Elementary School students and parents on Nov. 21 at the PRI site. Organized by the Parent-Teacher Organization, the Annual Fall Carnival is a way for parents to give back to the schools and community, and the kids love it. The Marana High School Band was on hand to set a happy tone.

Candidates for Legislative District 11 State Senate and House of Representatives will appear at the second 2014 Election Forum sponsored by Citizens for Picture Rocks (C4PR) on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Picture Rocks Community Center, 5615 N. Sanders Road. Former State Representative from Picture Rocks Jennifer Burns will again moderate as invited Senate candidates Jo Holt (D) and Steve Smith (R) respond to questions submitted from the community.
With a media event on Aug.19, Saguaro National Park began spraying glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, on buffelgrass in the Panther Peak area.
Continuing to pursue a quest initiated in 2003, in 2014 it was time to summit another state highpoint. With deep snow and cold weather blanketing the mountains of most western states, Oklahoma was designated the most likely candidate. Plans got underway.
Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM) began in August 2004 through the efforts of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Today, DIAM is the largest collaborative water safety effort in the state of Arizona. Governor Brewer, Drexel Heights Fire District Governing Board and Mayors across the state have signed proclamations designating August as Drowning Impact Awareness Month.Why August for DIAM?
It’s been years since Desert Winds Elementary and Picture Rocks Intermediate Schools were open for summer school.
On August 4, 2014 the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) publicly released 2014 AIMS results and the A-F school letter grades for schools throughout the state. The Marana Unified School District earned a high profile of B. One elementary school earned the ADE’s highest Achievement Profile of an A and fifteen Marana schools earned the Achievement Profile of a B.
Getting $10,000 for their POWER Pack program was a big deal for the Marana School District, but when an additional $5,000 was donated, it was even better.

The call of the great outdoors is irresistible to many, and in Southern Arizona you can count on nearly 300 sunny days per year. But venturing into the wilderness and exploring can mean entering into an extreme environment, where an injury can leave you stranded on a mountaintop or in the desert, hurt on a remote bike path, or severely dehydrated.
Avra Valley Coalition organizer Albert Lannon brought the implications of a Cananmex Highway through the Avra Valley to the May 20 Citizens for Picture Rocks meeting. He detailed the effects on neighbors and wildlife, including the loss of jobs along the present Interstate 10 corridor and the negative impacts on health, tourism and water.
