In a rematch of a razor-close 2012 congressional race, Democratic Congressman Ron Barber is in a fight for his political life against Republican challenger Martha McSally, a retired A-10 pilot who nearly beat him two years ago.
Recently, watching the (Congressional District 2) debate, I saw Ron Barber stammer and stumble when the moderator asked whether he had actually replied, “No,” to a reporter’s question of whether there was a short-term threat to the A-10 and to (Davis Monthan Air Force Base). He had said so, of course. And there was, and still is, such a threat. That’s because the Air Force has been forced to decide how to maintain its overall defense capability in the face of reckless spending reductions.
While Congressional District 1 is the 10th largest in the nation, and has one of the most diverse populations – both Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D) and challenger Ariz. House Speaker Andy Tobin (R) agree that the majority of the district is rural and the needs of constituents are common.
