TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona baseball players Kevin Newman and Mathew Troupe have been named Cape Cod League All-Stars, it was announced by the league on Saturday. Newman will represent the Western Division as the starting shortstop, while Troupe will be a relief pitcher for the Eastern Division.
Tabbed a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American for the Wildcats, Newman has continued his stellar play this summer with the Falmouth Commodores, who are challenging for the Western Division lead. Through Friday night’s action, Newman was batting .315 with 21 runs scored, 10 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases.
Arizona’s closer for the last two seasons, Troupe has turned in a strong summer in the same role with the Orleans Firebirds. The right-hander, who recently completed his sophomore season with the Wildcats, ranks second among all Cape Cod League pitchers with six saves. He boasts a 1.39 earned run average with 23 strikeouts against six walks in 13 innings over 11 appearances.
The 2013 Cape Cod League All-Star game will be played Saturday, July 27, at Red Wilson Field in South Yarmouth, Mass., home of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. FOX College Sports Atlantic will televise the game.
