Bear Bay tied his season-high in strikeouts with eight in the Tucson Padres 3-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Saturday at Kino Stadium. Bay threw seven innings, yielding seven hits, one run, and no walks in his third win of year.
The Sky Sox had an opportunity to score with the bases loaded in the top of the second with one out, but Bay forced a double play to end the threat. Vince Belnome clubbed a solo home run to right field in the bottom half of the inning to give Tucson an early 1-0 lead. The Padres had chance to score another run in the inning on Daniel Robertson’s two-out single, but Rocky Gale was thrown out at home plate by Sky Sox center fielder Tim Wheeler.
Jedd Gyorko’s two-run home run to center field in the fifth increased Tucson’s lead to 3-0. The home run was his 23rd of the season and his fifth in the past sevengames. Colorado Springs scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth on a Brendan Harris two-out RBI single to left field.
Jason Ray closed out the ninth inning with his first save for the Padres. Colorado Springs starting pitcher Guillermo Moscoso went 4.2 innings allowing seven hits and three runs in his sixth loss with the Sky Sox.
