Tucson Padres Game Summary
Tacoma 8 Tucson 7 - Saturday
WP: LaFromboise (3-1)
LP: Mikolas (1-1)
S: Pryor (3)
Tucson reliever Miles Mikolas overthrew catcher Rocky Gale on an intentional walk
pitch gone awry in the ninth inning Saturday, allowing Darren Ford to score from
third base with two outs. The bizarre play broke the tie in the ninth and helped the
Rainiers beat the Padres, 8-7. The Padres had a single by Andy Parrino and a walk
from Jedd Gyorko in the bottom of the ninth, but Stephen Pryor struck out Vince
Belnome to end the game.
The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Gyorko and a
sacrifice fly by Matt Clark. Three innings later Ford hit a grand slam for Tacoma,
part of his 4-for-5 night with six RBIs. The Padres trailed 7-4 in the sixth when
Gale hit a two-run single to get Tucson within one. Third baseman Alex Liddi
misplayed Daniel Robertson's ground ball one batter later, allowing Tucson to tie
the game. Danny Farquhar and Bobby LaFromboise combined to shut down the Padres in
the seventh and eighth innings.
The Padres and Rainiers have squared off five days in a row and all five contests
have been decided by one run. Clark and manager Terry Kennedy were ejected in the
sixth when home plate umpire Clint Fagan called Clark out on a check swing attempt
without asking for an appeal from a base umpire.
