The Tucson Padres had a one-run lead with two outs and two strikes Tuesday when Carlos Triunfel hit a two-run single in Tacoma's 3-2 win. The Rainiers had two walks, one intentional, in the ninth inning before Triunfel's hit against closer Erik Hamren. The Rainiers won five of the nine games the two teams have played in the last eight days.
Tucson scored in the first inning on an RBI single by first baseman Matt Clark and the lead held until Darren Ford's RBI single in the third tied the game. Rocky Gale grounded to shortstop with a runner at third in the fourth inning to put the Padres ahead, 2-1. Neither side scored again until the ninth inning. Tucson's Colt Hynes had his second straight magnificent start against the Rainiers, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing one run. In Hynes' last two starts, he has combined to pitch 13.2 innings while only allowing one run.
Tacoma's D.J. Mitchell was also excellent Tuesday, pitching seven innings without allowing an earned run. Mitchell did not factor in the decision. The Padres finished the month of July with a 14-14 record, their second winning month in team history.
