Boxer Flores wins a Golden Gloves title

Northwest amateur boxer Roderick Flores won an Arizona state championship at the Golden Gloves tournament earlier this month in Phoenix.

Flores prevailed in the 132-pound senior division at the tournament. Flores, 15, is a freshman at Mountain View High School.

Roderick trains at Boxing Inc., Ina and Old Father, under the tutelage of Rego Borrego and Roderick's father Rodney, according to Roderick's mom Carolyn. "They work with the kids on their fighting skills and work ethics," Carolyn Flores said. "There are a lot of good kids who really work hard."

Roderick is "very humble," and a good student, his mom says. Boxing has "done wonders for him."

Local skier third in state giant slalom

A Northwest woman captured third in the giant slalom at the annual Grand Canyon State Winter Games at Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff.

Shea Livingston, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Livingston, is a 16-year-old sophomore at Salpointe Catholic High School. She was a longtime member of the Flagstaff Alpine Ski Team and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Shea traveled to Flagstaff to train on weekends from 1999 through 2006 from Tucson, and has been previously ranked among Rocky Mountain USSA skiers.

The Grand Canyon State Games were founded in 1993 "to provide an Olympic-style competition for Arizonans of all ages and abilities," a release said. The games have evolved into a year-round, statewide operation "promoting health, fitness, education, recreational opportunities and community pride through the spirit of competition."
