Ten Catalina Foothills and four Ironwood Ridge tennis players earned top-eight seeds in the Division II boys and girls singles and doubles state tournament.

Kirtana Bhat was named the top girls seed, while the team of Nate Rasmussen and Quinn Gardner will be the top ranked boys doubles team.

The Falcons’ girls doubles teams of Noelle Karp and Katie Watson and Angelica Anderson and Caroline Leidy will be seeded second and fifth respectively, while the boys’ team of Bogdan Racolta and John Miller were ranked No. 3. Mike Lee earned the No. 2 seed in boys singles.

Ironwood Ridge had a pair of No. 3 seeds. Kelsey Brown and Allie Knox are the third-seeded boys doubles team, while Ryan Knox is the No. 3 seed in the boys singles tournament.  Stephanie Nickles is the No. 8 seeded girl.

Canyon Del Oro

Josh Case will represent the Dorado boys in singles, while Carolina Pensky will represent the girls. The girls doubles team of Glen Brumm and Ciara Daniels has also qualified.

Despite being 10-4 and winning five of the last six matches, it looks as if the Dorados boys tennis team will be on the outside looking in for the team playoffs. CDO is currently ranked 20th in the latest poll released Saturday and only 16 teams make the playoffs.

Likewise, the Dorado girls are currently 9-4 and ranked No. 21.

The Dorados baseball team is in no danger of falling out of the postseason despite dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker on Saturday, but they are still playing for rankings. CDO lost to Tucson High on Saturday and also lost a game to rival Ironwood Ridge, a rare loss to a team ranked well below them and boasting a record.

The Dorados don’t face a highly ranked opponent, but do have to travel to Maricopa and Poston Butte in the Phoenix area on Tuesday and Friday. They also host a Flowing Wells team that is really struggling to find their first regular season win.

The CDO softball team is on a roll. The Dorados have now won 11 straight after edging a tough Ironwood Ridge team and cruising past Rincon. They have just five games left, but only one against a top-10 opponent, a midweek tilt against No. 7, one-loss Sabino.

Catalina Foothills

Both the Falcon girls and boys tennis teams are in great shape. Both are undefeated. The boys are still ranked No. 1 in the state, while the girls are No. 2. All of their singles and doubles qualifiers for state earned top-eight seeds in the bracket.

The Falcon baseball team got a much needed win as they try to hold onto a playoff spot. After dropping two games the week prior, the Falcons found themselves ranked 19th in the Division II state rankings.

Only 24 teams make the state playoffs, though not necessarily the top-24 depending on how teams finish in their sections.

They played just one game last week, a 13-3 win over Casa Grande. The win improved them to 10-4 and they head into this week’s pivotal three-game schedule with some confidence. Although the Falcons would be in the playoffs if the season ended today, there is a lot of room to move up or down the rankings with four games to play over the next two weeks.

The Falcons will play three games in four days, hosting two of the three. They will host a struggling Vista Grande, a tough Cienega team fighting for a playoff bid and in between get a pesky Mountain View squad that still has distant playoff hopes, but is likely playing to end their season on a high note.

Ironwood Ridge

In addition to the four seeded players mentioned above, another singles player and doubles team qualified for state. The Nighthawks boys doubles team of Ben Sutton and Nick Thomson and singles player Brody Harn also qualified for state.

While many teams have concluded their season, both Ironwood Ridge squads still have a game against Marana, but win or lose, they appear to be tournament bound. Both squads fell to Catalina Foothills last week. It was the first loss of the year for the Nighthawk girls, who are now 12-1 and ranked No. 6. It was just the second loss for the boys team. They are 11-2, but currently hold the No. 5 ranking in the state.

Despite a difficult 6-4 loss to No. 3 CDO, the Nighthawk softball team is in very good shape. Currently ranked No. 4, the 12-3 Nighthawks have games against No. 14 Marana and a solid Maricopa squad. Two wins and they are almost assured a top-four seed in the playoffs and two home games to open the playoffs.

Marana

Marana will send two singles and two doubles teams to the Division II state playoffs this weekend. Amanda Henke will represent the Tiger girls, while Richard Rigby will compete for the Marana boys. On the doubles side, Diana Garcia and Maryam Rouhani will play for the girls team, while Philipp Roederer and Pedro Acosta will play for the boys.

The news will not be as good for the team tournament. Although the brackets have yet to be released, the boys and the girls teams will not likely be ranked high enough to earn bids. Both have winning records, both are 8-4, but they are ranked No. 29 and 30 respectively and only 16 teams make the playoffs. Both teams still face Ironwood Ridge, teams ranked in the top-6, but even if they beat the Nighthawks, it will take a lot of things breaking their way for either team to make a leap into the post season.

The Marana baseball team’s season is in make or break mode this week. Although there are two weeks left to play, the Tigers will need a strong week against decent opponents to make any move in the rankings. Although Palo Verde is a Division II squad, the Titans are a top-five ranked team with a gaudy record. Ironwood Ridge does not appear to be a playoff squad, but they are competitive enough that a win could help but not so good that a loss does not affect the rankings.

The Tiger girls are in good shape for a playoff berth, but have three tough opponents left. They currently hold the No. 14 ranking and want to keep a top-16 slot, so they can host at least one game this postseason. They can improve their rank with an upset win over Ironwood Ridge. They also get a solid Sunnyside team that is ranked 17th and would love a win over the Tigers to try to sneak into the top-16.

Mountain View

Mountain View will have two singles and two teams at the Division II state tournament. Carlos Carrizoza will be their boys singles representative, while Nicholas Chintis and Alex St. Peter will play doubles. On the girls side it will be sophomore Savanna Kelly in the singles bracket and Sammi Werts and McKenzie Dryden on the doubles side.

Pusch Ridge

The Pusch Ridge baseball team maintains their No. 2 ranking this week after beating Tombstone last Tuesday, in their only game of the week. This week they play three, including a road game at Patagonia and a rare Saturday road game at Tanque Verde.

Despite losing five of their last seven and two in a row, the Lions’ softball team still has a decent shot at the playoffs. Although they are just 6-7 in regular season games, they hold the No. 13 ranking thanks to a difficult schedule.

They have a three-game week upcoming, with two games against Tanque Verde sandwiched around a road game at Patagonia Union.

With just one game remaining the Pusch Ridge boys tennis team looks like they will have a very high seed in the Division III boys tournament. The Lions enter the week with the No. 2 ranking, a 13-0 record and a single game against No. 12 St. Gregory.

The girls have won five in a row, including a big win over Sabino last week and a road win at Santa Rita. They are ranked No. 14 and a win in their final match of the season against St. Gregory would really help seal a playoff spot.
