The 2012 NFL rookie draft class has certainly made a name for themselves and have taken over the headlines since entering the league. The two main names that you probably are aware of are, Andrew Luck who was drafted first overall by the Indianapolis Colts and directly after him came Robert Griffin III or RGIII to the Washington Redskins.

Beyond the top two picks, there are three other quarterbacks Ryan Tannenhill, Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson who have earned themselves starting positions for their respective teams. The last time something even close to this happened was in 1968 where there were three rookie starting quarterbacks.

It’s not simply that these five young men were talented enough to earn that coveted number one spot on their depth chart, it’s that they have completely turned their franchise around at the median age of 24.

Andrew Luck, who played at Stanford last year has transformed the 2-14 Colts, to 5-3 so far. From 5-11 last season, RGIII has not had as much luck as Luck since the Redskins are currently 3-6 but are on the rise. The 6-10 Dolphins of last year are now 4-4 and in second place in their division behind Tannenhill. The Seahawks and Wilson are also sitting at second in their division with a 5-4 record. Weeden and the Cleveland Browns may be the exception to exceptional rookies due to their poor 2-7 start, but after all Weeden shouldn’t really be a rookie at the age of 29.

The most surprising thing about it all is that each of the teams that are led by rookie quarterbacks were not expected to even be considered for the playoffs. In the meantime, they have gone out and beaten future Hall of Famers such as, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

It gets better. If you are playing Fantasy Football this year, you either love him or hate him; his name is Doug Martin and he has put together a total of 486 yards and six touchdowns just in the last two games alone. The rookie who was barely drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has shattered all expectations.

After only nine weeks of regular season games, it is clear that this year is the year of the rookie. From first pick (Andrew Luck), to 75th pick (Russell Wilson), this group of players are only a glimpse of the future of the NFL.

In a game that demands so much physically, emotionally and even a little spiritually, the trend of dominating rookies is on the rise. The year of the rookie has surprised everyone, including future Hall of Fame quarterbacks who see just about everything coming.
