The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (3-7, 3-4 in conference) held a slim lead over Mesa Community College at the end of the first half but the Thunderbirds took control down the stretch to close it out.
The Aztecs were outscored 48-30 in the second half and lost 97-80. Mesa used the three-ball to put them up by double digits late in the half as they hit seven in the second half and 13 for the game.
Pima trailed by nine points on a couple of occasions in the first half but used a 13-2 to take a 40-38 lead. Andres Marquez (Nogales HS) hit a running layup as time expired to put the Aztecs up 50-49 at the break.
Five players scored in double figures for the Aztecs led by Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS), who had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Matt O’Boyle (Sunrise Mountain HS) had 13 points and nine rebounds while Marquez finished with 12 points and seven assists. Bryan Cervantes (Nogales HS) had 11 points while Tyler Roberts finished with 10.
The Aztecs will host Planet Academy at the West Campus on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
