Marana dominates Cholla, all Northwest schools win

Quarterback Ben Honea ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns last week, leading his Marana Tigers (3-2) to a dominating 39-3 win over the visiting Cholla Chargers (1-4). 

Three of Honea’s touchdowns came on runs of at least 52 yards, and running back Bradley Gonzales added a 98-yard touchdown in the third quarter to build on a 24-0 halftime lead that was never threatened.

Honea also threw for 41 yards in the game.

The Tigers scored three times in the third quarter to extend to a 39-0 lead before the Chargers managed to knock in a field goal midway through the fourth quarter.  

The loss was the fourth in a row for the Chargers, while the Tigers collect their second consecutive win and will look to expand that streak when they face Maricopa High School on Friday. 

 

Mountain View

The Mountain View Mountain Lions edged San Tan Valley team Poston Butte (3-3) 28-27 on Friday to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The Mountain Lions’ defense came away with three interceptions, while running back Richie Estrada led the offensive charge, running for 115 yards in the win. 

The Mountain Lions next face the undefeated Salpointe Catholic Lancers on Friday.

 

Canyon Del Oro 

The Canyon Del Oro Dorados topped Desert View (1-4) 42-10 at home on Friday to collect their fourth win of the season. The Dorados jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead and scored 14 more in the second half to seal the game. 

Quarterback Jordan Closs-Lopez threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and added 72 rushing yards to go with two touchdown runs.

The Dorados will visit Catalina Foothills High School on Friday. 

 

Ironwood Ridge 

Ironwood Ridge (4-1) defeated the visiting Buena Colts (2-3) last week by a score of 51-33.

Running backs Cole McLafferty and Jake Vartanian scored a combined three of the Nighthawks’ touchdowns, while receiver Ryan Quinn added another two scores. Also finding the end zone for Ironwood Ridge were receivers Matt Solverson and Dylan McCutcheon.

The Nighthawks will host Rincon High School on Friday. 

 

Pusch Ridge 

The Pusch Ridge Lions (4-1) shut out Baboquivari High School (0-5) 49-0 last week, and will look to build on a three-game win streak when they take on San Tan Foothills High School on Friday. 

Leading the way for the Lions were running backs Taylor Fitzgerald with two touchdown rushes and Conner Reilly with two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jacob Frithsen threw for one touchdown to go with 65 yards in the air on 2-3 passing.
