Olympians are joining this Saturday, March 6, to help motivate young people to lead healthy lifestyles.

The mission of Sports Extravaganza is "to promote the development of life skills through sports as a means to fight childhood obesity for underprivileged and underserved communities," according to founder LaTanya Sheffield.

Sheffield, herself a former Olympic hurdler, is getting help from Olympians Willie Banks, Andre Phillips and Lacey Nymeyer, who'll work with kids between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at Flowing Wells High School.

For 11 years, the non-profit Sports Extravaganza, Inc., has utilized Olympians and sports professionals to provide free, hands-on instruction in the skills of running, jumping and throwing.

Sports Extravaganza's goal "is to inspire kids to play on the field rather than on their computer, because active kids develop into healthy adults," Sheffield said. "Our Olympians agree that the first step toward health and fitness is taking the first step to physical activity."

In America, the number of overweight children between the ages of 6 to 17 years has doubled within the last three decades. Medical conditions such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and respiratory complications are also associated with being overweight. "Sports Extravaganza has adopted the methodology that implements the first step to proactive solutions," she said.

Registration for Saturday's event is available at www.sportsx.org.a
