The Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks remained undefeated on Friday, beating the Mountain View Mountain Lions 42-14.

The game started as many Ironwood Ridge games do, with a couple quick touchdowns to put Nighthawks up early.

It was the Nighthawks’ special teams to strike first, when Devon Olivarez recovered a blocked punt for the score.

On a reverse play, running back Jake Vartanian then went 42 yards rushing to build the Nighthawks’ lead to 13-0.

Then came Mountain View, scoring twice in the next three minutes to put the Nighthawks on their heels with a 14-13 deficit early in the second quarter.

Tight end Corbon Gouby was put in scoring position after Justice Summerset pulled down an interception to bring out Mountain View’s offense.

Quarterback Cody Rochon took advantage, rushing 40 yards and passing for nine to put the Mountain Lions on the Nighthawks’ one-yard line, where Gouby would drive through a heap of defenders to put the Mountain Lions on the board.

On Mountain View’s first offensive drive of the second quarter, Estrada found a gap in the defense, rushing 58 yards for the touchdown and the lead.

“They really came out and punched us in the mouth,” said Nighthawks’ slot receiver Cris Thorson. “It wasn’t our best half.”

Still, the Nighthawks would manage to regain the lead before hitting the locker rooms.

Quarterback Tyler Williams found wide receiver Jake Matthews for a 28-yard gain, and running back Anthony Braunreiter would convert on a two-yard touchdown carry.

Williams ran in a two-point conversion to put the Nighthawks back on top, 21-14, a lead the Nighthawks would look to increase in the third quarter.

“We really wanted to come out of the locker room and play faster, and more aggressively,” said Thorson.

Thorson would lead that charge for Ironwood Ridge out of the half, scoring two of the Nighthawks’ next three touchdowns, while the Ironwood Ridge defense would keep Mountain View scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Vartanian rushed for a 36-yard score early in the third, and Thorson would follow that up with a 52-yard rushing touchdown of his own to put the Nighthawks comfortably ahead at 34-14.

The Mountain Lions were limited to fourth and long in their next two offensive possessions, turning over possession on downs each time.

On second and 10 at the Mountain View 46-yard line, Braunreiter muscled his way through the defense for a gain of 34, bringing the drive to first and 10 on the 12-yard line. Thorson would finish the job, rushing one yard on first and goal to seal the game at 42-14.

“They played a good game, and we made some mistakes,” said Mountain View Head Coach Clarence McRae. “We had some opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize.”

Braunreiter finished the game with one touchdown and 207 yards rushing, while Estrada rushed for 164 yards and one touchdown.
