The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (6-7) defeated The Soldierz club team 102-93 on Sunday in the second day of the Pima Men’s Basketball Invitational at the West Campus.
The Aztecs trailed late in the first half but Shakir Smith (Tucson Magnet HS) hit two 3-pointers to put the Aztecs up 34-30. Pima would later go on an 8-0 to take its first double digit lead of the game at 42-32. The Soldierz gained some momentum and cut the lead to six but Smith would convert on a four-point play to get the lead back to 10.
The Soldierz hit two quick three-pointers to tie it early in the second half but Pima responded when Bryan Cervantes (Nogales HS) hit a three-pointer to give the Aztecs the lead for good. The Aztecs converted on six three-point play opportunities in the second half.
Smith hit seven 3-pointers and finished with game-high 36 points for the game. He also had seven assists. Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS) collected his fourth foul with 5:52 left in the first half but played the entire second half finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Matt O’Boyle (Sunrise Mountain HS) scored 10 of his 18 points in the first half and Cervantes had 10 points.
The Aztecs will close out the Pima Invitational on Monday when they host Midland College (TX) at 4 p.m.
