University of Arizona senior linebacker Jake Fischer is a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award and William V. Campbell Trophy. The 170 candidates were nominated by their schools as the best all-around student-athlete on their respective teams.

Each nominee must meet the highest of standards based on their performance in the classroom, on the field and as outstanding leaders and citizens in the community. The candidates come from all levels of play in the NCAA and the NAIA. The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 honorees with each receiving an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and one being named the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy.

Fischer is majoring in marketing with a 3.363 cumulative GPA. He is on track to graduate in December 2013 but may pursue an additional business management degree to be completed in May 2014. He is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and was a 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Fischer was named a team captain as a junior in 2012, has twice been selected as a weekly captain during the 2013 season and was twice Arizona's defensive representative for Pac-12 Football Media Day.

He was a 2012 AFCA Good Works Team nominee, has collected more than 40 hours of community service in his career, serves as a big brother on the football team, specifically mentoring one new freshman, and is a founding member of Arizona football's chapter of Uplifting Athletes.

Fischer is a member of the 2013 Lott Award Watch List and the 2013 Bednarik Award Watch List. He has played in 43 games, including 24 starts, and has never missed a game in his competitive seasons (redshirted in 2011). He was named 2012 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and is a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Week.

In 2013, he’s collected 20 tackles (14 solo and six assisted) with one interception for 49 return yards and a score and one fumble recovery for six yards. He was the 2012 team leader in tackles with 119 (76 solo and 43 assisted) while averaging 9.15 tackles per game. Fischer had career-high 14 tackles in the 59-38 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State.

The Wildcats will play at USC on Oct. 10 in a 7:30 pm MST kickoff. The game will be televised by Fox Sports 1.

Tickets for the 2013 football season, including in the north end zone and club level of the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility, are available and can be purchased by visiting the McKale Center Ticket Office, calling 520-621-CATS or by visiting ArizonaWildcats.com/footballtickets.
