The Pima Community College baseball team (7-10-1, 4-4 in conference) got great pitching which led to a win in the first game but couldn’t overtake Phoenix College in the second game on Tuesday in Phoenix.
Jake Cole (Sahuaro HS) pitched a complete-game giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks as the Aztecs took the first game 5-1 in seven innings. Cole improved to 1-2 on the year. Pima struck first in the 2nd inning when Sergio Ortiz (Sunnyside HS) hit a 2-run RBI single. The Aztecs never lost the lead. After Phoenix College scored a run in the 4th, Pima came right back and scored two more runs in the 5th. Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) had an RBI single to help Pima’s cause. Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) finished the game 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored while Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) scored two runs after being walked twice in the game.
In the second game, Phoenix scored three runs in the 6th inning as the Aztecs fell 3-2 in nine innings. Dylan Dyson (Flowing Wells HS) put Pima up in the 1st inning with an RBI single that brought in Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS), who had two doubles for the game. The Aztecs went up 2-0 in the 4th inning after Arvizu hit in Andre Porterfield (Sahuarita HS). Scotty Watson (Empire HS) took the loss (1-2).
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Eastern Arizona College in a doubleheader. The first game starts at noon.
