The Canyon Del Oro Dorados missed the playoffs last year.

It’s a mistake they don’t plan on repeating.

In Friday night’s D-III contest against the Marana Tigers, the Dorados improved to 7-1 on the season with a 41-13 win, and could easily enter the playoffs with a 9-1 record as they close out the regular season with very winnable games against Flowing Wells and Casa Grande, who only have a combined three wins this year.

If the Dorados perform at all like they did against the Tigers, 9-1 shouldn’t be a problem.

The Dorados had their way with Marana from the get-go, preventing their opponent from crossing midfield in their first three possessions and subsequently forcing punts.

And each of those times, CDO answered with a score.

Quarterback Jordan Closs-Lopez connected 35 yards downfield with JJ Metz, and then rushed for 27 yards to lead the Dorados to the three-yard line. With 4:56 left in the first, Closs-Lopez finished the drive on a keeper to put his team up 7-0.

Running back Max Smith kept the momentum going in the very next drive when he capped off a 49-yard push with a six-yard rushing score as the quarter wound down.

Things only got worse for the Tigers in the second quarter when CDO put up 20 more points and limited Marana to a solo touchdown.

Smith picked up his second score of the game on first and goal to make it 21-0 before Marana answered with a 70-yard, five-play score.

But whenever the Tigers did something good, the Dorados did it better.

From the CDO 20-yard line, Metz broke free with the half winding down for an 80-yard score to make it 28-7.

“A lot of guys were making a lot of plays for us tonight,” said head coach Dustin Peace.

One of those guys was Closs-Lopez, who opened up the scoring again with a 28-yard carry to put the

Dorados up by 27. Another was Kyle Larkin, who added a score on a 36-yard carry with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

Marana could only find the end zone once more in the game thanks to the defensive efforts of the Dorados.

“Defensively, if we keep playing the way we are, that’s exciting,” said Peace. “We were really able to stuff them tonight.”

Closs-Lopez finished things off with another rushing score after narrowly avoiding being sacked.

Peace says the 41-13 statement-win is exactly what his Dorados need as playoffs draw near.

“We’re getting CDO’s name back to where it belongs,” he said. “That’s a testament to them and this whole team and the commitment they’ve made to fight back and get us back where we need to be.”
