The Pima cross country teams took part in the Region I Cross Country Championships in Gilbert, AZ on Tuesday at Freestone Park.
The women’s team finished tied for 2nd place with Central Arizona with 48 points, as Mesa Community College took first with 40. In the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) race, Jamie Shrader (Flagstaff HS) finished in 3rd place, in the field of 39 runners, with a time of 19 minutes, 20 seconds. Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) took 5th place. Shrader and Regalado earned Region I First Team honors.
Lucia Hernandez (Tucson HS) and Esther Estrada (Nogales HS) took home Region I Third Team honors for their efforts in the race. Hernandez finished 11th with a time of 20:01 while Estrada took 13th at 20:12.
The women’s team was 12th in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings.
The men’s team finished with 107 points, which gave them 5th place out of seven teams. Central Arizona took 1st with 26 points.
In a field of 47 runners, Tyler Stamp (Sabino HS) finished the 8 kilometers (5 miles) race in 13th place with a time of 26:23. He earned Region I Third Team honors. Aren Maxwell (Flowing Wells HS) closed out the day in 20th with a time of 27:24.
The men’s team was 20th in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings.
The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA National Championships on Nov. 10 at Rend Lake College in Ina, IL.
