The Pima Community College softball team (6-2, 3-1 in conference) came back in its second game against Yavapai College after dropping the first on Saturday at the West Campus’ Aztec Field.
The Aztecs lost the first game 4-3 after Yavapai scored two runs in the bottom half of the 6th inning. The Aztecs led 3-2 going into the inning but a walk with the bases loaded and a throwing error led to the Aztecs losing the lead. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) pitched seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Aztecs came back when Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single and Alvarez hit a sac-fly that scored Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) which tied the game at 2-2. The Aztecs took the lead 3-2 in the 4th inning when Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS) hit a solo homerun. Medina finished 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Pelayo went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
The second game featured dramatics once again but this time the Aztecs came out with the win. Pima won 7-5 as Alvarez (3-2) once again pitched seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. With the game tied at 5-5, Alvarez helped her own cause by hitting a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the Aztecs the lead for good. The Aztecs trailed 5-2 going into the 4th inning but scored three runs to get back in it. Pelayo contributed with a 2-run RBI double in that inning. Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) and Victoria Mariscal (Douglas HS) each went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double in the game.
The Aztecs will have its third straight double header at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Mesa Community College. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
