For the fourth consecutive week, the Pacific West Conference has landed three teams in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball West Region Poll.
Grand Canyon (19-2/14-2) climbed one spot to sixth, while Dixie State (15-2/14-2 In-Region) swapped places with the Antelopes and fell to sixth. Hawai‘i Pacific (15-4/12-4) posted a 2-0 week and climbed another notch to eighth in the region.
The Division II women’s basketball committee in Indianapolis released the rankings on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The Top 10 teams are listed in each of the eight regions. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 2 leading up to the 64-team NCAA II selection show on March 6.
Both Dixie State and Grand Canyon remained ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll that was released on Feb. 15. Dixie State jumped to 12th in the nation, while Grand Canyon remained at no. 10.
Dixie State freshman Erica Carlson, a Canyon del Oro graduate, reigns atop an NCAA II statistical category – blocked shots per game. She ranks first in the nation in rejections with her 3.9 per-game average, while senior teammate Breann Hill (Harrisburg, Pa./McDevitt) stands ninth in the nation in field goal percentage (58.4 percent). She has made 111 of 190 attempts from the floor.
Grand Canyon senior guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix/Xavier Prep) also continues to lead all NCAA Division II women’s basketball players in scoring with her 25.5 points per game average – more than four points per game better than second place Mystee Dale of West Alabama who is averaging 21.3 per contest.
Hawai‘i Hilo junior forward Hillary Hurley (Anderson, Calif./Enterprise) ranks second in the country in shooting at 61.2 percent. She has made 90 of 147 field goal attempts and is just 0.7 percent behind the nation’s leader — Shannon McKever of Landon.
