The Pima Community College softball team (9-5, 6-4 in conference) dropped the first game but responded in a big way in second game against South Mountain Community College on Tuesday in Phoenix. Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) had the big bat for the Aztecs finishing the doubleheader going 6 for 8 with five RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles and a homerun.
The Aztecs took an early lead but lost 5-4 in the first game. Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS) hit a 2-run homerun to get the Aztecs on the board in the 2nd inning. South Mountain responded with five runs in the 3rd. Pelayo and Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) hit solo homeruns in the 5th inning as the rally fell short. Pelayo finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Alvarez (4-4) had two strikeouts and two walks in the loss.
The Aztecs put the game out of reach as they scored eight runs in the 4th inning and six in the 5th as Pima won the second game 19-3 in five innings. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) came back after dropping her first game of the season on Saturday by finishing with three strikeouts and one walk. She improved to 5-1 on the year. Pelayo was 4 for 5 with four RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles. Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Stephanie Ramirez (Benson HS) finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Phoenix College in a doubleheader. The first game starts at noon.
