Brooke Seavitt played basketball for the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks (13-5) in their 43-32 win over Canyon Del Oro (9-9) last Tuesday.

She'll likely be donning a soccer jersey in the next week or so; Seavitt is a goal keeper for the girls soccer team.

"Seavitt plays two sports," said Nighthawk coach Don Dickinson. "It's been cleared athletically. She's become a big part of our offense."

Seavitt's presence was invaluable in Ironwood Ridge's win over its cross-town rival. Seavitt led all scorers with 19 points after making the game's only two three-point shots, and adding 5-6 at the free-throw line. Seavitt said assistant coach David Elliott "has helped me with my shot.

"It was a good win," Seavitt said. "It was against our rival."

The Nighthawks took command early on with a 14-4 run. Seavitt scored 10 points in the first period, making three of her first five shots.

Mya Perrow-Donovan scored 12 points in the post with 4-7 from the floor, and was 4-4 on the line. Center Kelci Wilson made her first four shots and added nine points to balance out the Nighthawk scoring.

Defensively, the Nighthawks forced the Dorados to miss six of their first seven shots.

"When we play Nighthawk basketball," Dickinson said, "we play defense and rotate around. We rebound and screen out well."

Building a 30-13 halftime lead, the Nighthawk defense was evident in forcing 11 turnovers, and in hampering CDO's leading scorer, Melanie Morris, who was averaging 12 points a game. Morris was held to one field goal and three points in the first half.

"I was too far under the basket," Morris said. "They played good defense."

Dickinson was aware of what Morris could do.

"We have three post players," Dickinson said. "We made it difficult for her."

In the second half, Morris and her teammates started playing Dorado defense, holding the Nighthawks to 13 points, and outscoring them 19-13.

Morris finished with 12 points, after tallying nine in the second half. Fellow post player Chelsea Canham took over some of the offensive shortage while Morris struggled early, and ended up with 11 points herself. Canham was 3-7 for the floor, and 5-7 on foul shots.

In the second half, the Dorado defense set the tone for an improved effort. They came out with a defensive intensity that forced seven turnovers in the third, and limited the Nighthawks to seven points. Also, Seavitt was pulled out with three personal fouls. Ironwood's offense struggled without her.

"We made some good adjustments at halftime," said Dorados coach Kerri Brown. "In the first half, our shots weren't falling. (Ironwood Ridge) is very well coached. That has a lot to do with it."

In the fourth quarter, with Seavitt still on the bench, the Dorados went on a 10-2 run to narrow the gap to 39-30. Morris had a key basket, then Canham made two free throws.

"Our team worked a lot harder in the second half," Morris said.

Seavitt returned and made a layup for a 41-30 lead in favor of Ironwood Ridge with 2:54 left.

In a tough week, the Nighthawks would have to face both Tucson and Salpointe, which would be a strong barometer for whether they're playoff ready for February. The Dorados are now 9-9
