The Pima Community College men’s tennis team took fourth place and finished with six points in the NJCAA Region I Tournament on Tuesday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
The Aztecs fell one point behind Paradise Valley Community College, who finished in third place for the final spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Aztecs produced two players in the singles championship matches. Dylan Vo (Ironwood Ridge HS), who was seeded No. 2 in the No. 2 singles spot, fell in his finals match to Felipe Burnac from Scottsdale Community College 6-3, 6-3. Brian Soto (Nogales HS) was seeded No. 2 in No. 5 singles competition and dropped his finals match to David Pollack from Scottsdale Community College 6-1, 6-1.
Vo and doubles partner Joe Owen (Douglas HS) lost in the No. 1 doubles semifinals 6-3, 6-3 while Soto and DJ Campas fell in the No. 2 doubles semifinals 6-0, 6-1.
“It's clear that the team members made good progress individually,” Pima coach Brian Ramirez said. “This is in large part due to the great attitude each team member displayed all season. This was easily seen by having two finalists in singles at Regionals and improved results for each team member in singles and doubles. The team should be very proud of how hard they fought all season.”
