Junior Brad Tandy continues to be as good as advertised after shattering the Pac-12 meet record and school record in the 50 free to lead the Arizona men’s swim team on day two at the Pac-12 Championships inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Tandy, who is competing in his first meet as a member of the Wildcats, broke Nathan Adrien’s (Cal) previous meet record of 18.82 from back in 2009. Meanwhile, he became the first Wildcat to ever break the 19 second mark in the event. Arizona’s previous record was a 19.03 set by Adam Small back in 2011. The time is also the fastest in the country so far this year. Tandy was also part of Arizona’s meet record setting 200 medley relay team last night.

In addition to Tandy’s record setting effort, the Wildcats also had several other impressive performances. Senior Matt Barber earned a third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:14.36. The time should punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the event.

Meanwhile, Sam Rowan took fourth-place in the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.40. Michael Meyer earned a second-place finish in the “B” final of the 200 IM with Eric Solis placing second and Andrew Porter taking seventh.

Freshman Renny Richmond and Brian Stevens picked up points for the Wildcats as well after finishing 6-7 in the “B” final of the 50 free. Richmond finished in 19.87 with Stevens clocking in with a time of 20.07. Jeff Amlee also swam a sub-20 in the event with a 19.96 in the “C” final.

The Wildcats closed out the night with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay as Amlee, Stevens, Richmond and Tandy finished with a time of 1:17.65.

After two days of competition, Arizona sits fourth in the team standings with 193 points. Cal holds the team lead with 271 points with Stanford in second (243), USC (208) in third, Arizona fourth and Utah rounding out the top-five with 119 points.

Day three of the Pac-12 Championships will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back with the finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tomorrow night’s final will also include the 400 medley relay.
