Broncos put on a 5K to raise funds

A local youth football program is taking to the streets of Marana to raise money.

The first Marana Broncos 5K run or walk is on the schedule for Sunday, Sept. 26. Money raised "all goes to the kids," said Dori Stolmaker, event coordinator for the fund-raiser.

Walking and running begins at Continental Ranch Community Park at 9 a.m. that Sunday. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Early registration before Friday, Aug. 20, is $18 for adults and $12 for young people 18 and under. Children 6 and under are free. Prices increase to $25 for adults and $18 for ages 18 and under after Aug. 20. The first 25 families to sign up receive four passes to Breakers Water Park this summer.

There'll be a special guest speaker, vendors of all kinds, jumping castles, music, food and trophies for the winners. Everyone that signs up gets a T-shirt.

"This is a great opportunity for Marana to do something together," Stolmaker said. She hopes it's on an annual basis.

Running a youth football program for 400 players ages 6-12 can be expensive, Stolmaker said. The league anticipates $65,000 in expenses for uniforms this season. Helmet reconditioning alone can run up to $20,000.

The Broncos fund a scholarship program, based upon a player's grades. Some funds help pay for travel, too.

Practices are beginning. Games start the last week of August, played primarily on Saturday mornings. "It's a lot of fun to go to the games," Stolmaker said. There are opportunities for cheerleading, tackle or flag football, a passing league and more.

Registration for the Marana Broncos is priced at $150, which covers uniforms and equipment. "Every kid plays every game," Stolmaker said.

Steve Marshall is the president of the Marana Broncos. It is a volunteer organization, and more help is needed. "It's a huge commitment, not only for the kids but for the parents," Stolmaker said.
