Visitors to the 2011 World Golf Championship – Accenture Match Play Championship next week can expect security checks, but no more than in years past.

Spectators will be allowed to bring personal cameras next Monday and Tuesday, when the world-class roster of 64 pro golfers are warming up. However, cameras will not be permitted on the golf course during actual tournament play, and cell phones are prohibited at all times.

“Spectators will be screened before entering the event. Bags will be obviously checked,” said Tim Brunenkant, the public information officer for the Marana Police Department. “We will have plenty of officers on the golf course, in the clubhouse and on the driving range to ensure the safety of the spectators as well as the golfers.”

Working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, Regional SWAT team, PGA security and competing golfers’ security staff, the Marana Police Department will provide both uniformed and plain-clothed officers in and around the tournament.

Event security staff members have created plans for an assortment of scenarios. They have taken a proactive approach to forestalling potential security issues by screening attendees’ bags and using detection dogs to sweep the golf course and facilities, Brunenkant said.

“Like every year, we put the security and the traffic plans in place to make sure that everything runs smoothly, and we take every year seriously for the possibility that something could go wrong,” Brunenkant said. “We plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

The Accenture Match Play Championship will take place Feb. 21-27 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, in Marana.
