The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (12-6-1, 12-6-1 in conference) dug itself out of an early hole and completed the comeback in overtime as the Aztecs came back from being down 3-0 to beat Mesa Community College 4-3 in overtime. The Aztecs are 5-0-1 in their last six games.

Arturo Vega (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored the winning goal in overtime off of a deflection in the 93rd minute. Down 3-0, Vega also put the Aztecs on the board in the 41st minute with a shot that was crossed over to him by Anthony Alvarez. Pima trailed 3-1 at halftime.

Alexis Medina could feel the momentum turning Pima’s way at the end of the first half.

“The last 10 minutes of the first half, we had three chances to score,” Medina said. “At halftime, we thought we could beat these guys. We used it as motivation and we played together.”

In the second half the tide did shift Pima’s way by controlling possession but it couldn’t put any goals in. A foul was called which gave Medina a penalty kick that he put in at the 79th minute to cut it to 3-2. With time ticking away, a hand-ball call was made and Medina put another penalty shot through the net at the 88th minute to tie it up.

Mesa scored its goals in the 11th, 14th and 37th minutes.

The Aztecs had two shots on goal in the first half and five in the second half. Emmanuel Jimenez finished the game with four saves.

The Aztecs are in sole possession of fourth place and will play at Scottsdale Community College on Saturday at 7 p.m. to close out the regular season.
