The Mountain View Mountain Lions lost a heartbreaker to Tucson High last Friday night, as the Badgers won 13-10 in overtime.

It was an emotional game for the Mountain Lions as they faced former head coach Justin Argraves on the other side of the field. Argraves left Mountain View after one season for the head coaching position at Tucson High.

Mountain View quarterback Cris Thorson said while the team didn’t focus a lot on the reunion with former coach Argraves, there was a certain motivation aspect.

“Words can’t describe this loss,” said Thorson. “We loved (coach Argraves). We wanted to get out there tonight and show him what he’s missing out on.”

In the first quarter, the Badgers found some success running the stretch play with tailback Dre Williams.

In a three-play drive, Williams found the end zone from 11 yards out, giving the Badgers a 7-0 lead with 5:06 left in the first quarter, a lead they would carry into halftime.

After the half, the Mountain Lions’ offense showed some signs of life. On a key fourth down, Thorson kept the drive alive, connecting with Jerry Teague for a 6-yard pick up.

The Mountain Lions capitalized on the conversion with Thorson hitting Teague in the corner of the end zone for the 8-yard touchdown. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 7-7, with 4:53 left in the third quarter.

Both teams had opportunities in the fourth quarter but failed to find the end zone, sending the game into overtime.

With the game tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation, the Mountain Lions were in familiar territory heading into overtime. In week two, the Mountain Lions had defeated Canyon Del Oro in overtime.

In Friday’s game, the Mountain Lions took the first shot. After three downs with no touchdown, Cody Rochon kicked a field goal on fourth down, giving Mountain View a 10-7 lead.

Tucson High got right to work on first down, with Williams running up the middle to score, winning the game 13-10.

Thorson said the defense had been holding the Badgers throughout the entire second half. After kicking the field goal, they expected Tucson High would do the same, and the game would go into double overtime.

Mountain View head coach Larry Branson agreed it was a tough loss for the Mountain Lions to swallow.

In addressing the team following the game, Branson said, “We took them into overtime. We held them scoreless in the second half. I hate losing to them. We now know we have a rivalry to look forward to.”

Despite the emotional loss, Branson stressed they played a good game, and will have to start focusing on the rest of the season.

After falling to 3-3, Branson said the Mountain Lions are going to have to fight to get into playoffs with some tough games ahead.

This week, the Mountain Lions will have a short week to prepare for one of the best teams in the region.

In a Division II, Section II contest, the Mountain Lions will go up against the Nighthawks atIronwood Ridge high school Thursday night starting at 7.

Ironwood Ridge will be looking to bounce back after losing to Centennial 21-7 on Friday. The loss marked the first in the season for the Nighthawks, who fell to 5-1.
