A graduate of Santa Rita High School from right here in Arizona, Terrell Stoglin, has certainly made a name for himself. Stoglin was ranked by ESPN.com as the 19th-best point guard in the 2010 recruiting class as he received scholarship offers from Maryland, Texas A&M, Penn State and San Diego. He also received interest from Arizona, Arizona State, California, Georgetown and USC. That is quite a list considering Arizona is not known for their elite high school basketball. Stoglin, who graduated from Santa Rita in 2010, averaged 29.4 points, 6.4 assists and 2 steals a game in his senior season. He went on to lead Santa Rita to a state championship that year behind his impressive 22 points. His high school coach, Jim Ferguson, described Stoglin as confident without being arrogant.

Earlier in April of 2009, Stoglin decided to take his game to the University of Maryland. “I like the way Coach Williams coaches and I like the program overall. Maryland has a great guard history and I just thought I’d pull the trigger,” he said.

Williams expects Stoglin to contribute immediately as a freshman.

As a freshman, Stoglin, at just over six feet, found his way into the starting line up and was able to score 11.4 points per game. However, he was playing in the shadow of 6’10 forward Jordan Williams who was clearly the leader of that team. Regardless, he was able to find his stride and get comfortable with the Maryland program before there was much pressure on him. That would all change by next season.

Now in his sophomore year he has become not only a starting guard, but also the go-to player for the Terrapins. He has done an impressive job since arriving in College Park. He has climbed his way up to become the leading scorer in the ACC (Atlantic Coastal Conference), averaging a remarkable 21.8 points per game, which ranks him 5th in all of college basketball. By no means do those points come easy as the Terrapins take on college hoop powerhouses such as North Carolina and Duke. Stoglin has proved that he is the clear leader of that team as he takes on the stars of the ACC nightly.

Stoglin, who was very much over-looked coming out of high school, maybe because of his size or other reasons, has really silenced his critics. He continues to succeed at a high level and has created his identity as a prolific scorer. All of this brings into question; did Arizona pass up on a hometown star?
