The Pima Community College baseball team (15-14-1, 6-8 in conference) had its six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday as the Aztecs dropped a doubleheader at GateWay Community College in Phoenix.
The Pima offense couldn’t get going in its 2-1 loss in the first game. Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) suffered his first loss of the season (5-1) after pitching six innings giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. He threw 81 pitches. GateWay scored its two runs in the second inning. The Aztecs got the board in the 6th inning after Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) hit a sacrifice that scored Bryant Muñoz (Tucson Magnet HS). Schira also hit a triple in the game. Juan Gamez (Cienega HS) went 2 for 3 in the game.
GateWay halted a Pima rally in the 9th inning as the Aztecs fell 7-3 in the second game. They scored one run in the top of the 9th. Hyrum Formo (Hayden HS) took the loss (1-2) after giving up seven runs (four earned) off nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Scotty Watson (Empire HS) pitched two innings in relief and gave up no hits with three strikeouts. Sergio Ortiz (Sunnyside HS) went 4 for 4 in the game while Gamez finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Andre Porterfield (Sahuarita HS), Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) and Schira each scored a run.
The Aztecs will play a single game on Thursday against Vancouver Island College at the West Campus. The game will start at 3 p.m.
