Regional individuals, teams grab state's highest hardware

The Northwest side of the Tucson area just got a lot shinier.

A host of local prep programs have brought home shimmering state championship trophies in the past several weeks, giving the traditionally dominant Phoenix-area schools something to think about in the upcoming seasons.

May 16 was a particularly good day for Canyon Del Oro.

The Dorados' softball team brought home its third straight state title, as future University of Arizona Wildcat and 2008 Gatorade Softball Player of the Year Kenzie Fowler overwhelmed Cienega, allowing one hit and striking out 14.

CDO (34-2) won 4-0, and Fowler got a win on the field she'll be performing on next season — UA's Hillenbrand Stadium.

The 24-7 CDO baseball team also won the 4A-I state title on Saturday, dominating Glendale Cactus 15-5 after a playoff journey that included last-inning victories in the first three games. Senior designated hitter Doug Steele's 3 for 5, 6-RBI performance lit the offensive fire for the Dorados.

Another trophy will be residing less than a mile from CDO's, as Pusch Ridge Christian Academy took the 2A state baseball crown in assertive fashion, beating San Manuel 15-5 in a six-inning, mercy-rule-ended contest at Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday. Senior shortstop Joey DeGroff went 4 for 5 with seven RBIs for the 23-3 Lions, and senior pitcher Dawson Jones, son of coach and former Major League pitcher Doug Jones pitched a full game, allowing only two hits in his final three innings.

Northwest track and field teams were equally powerful at state.

The Ironwood Ridge boys and girls won the 5A-II team championships at the state meet last weekend, counting on individual championship performances from junior Steve Magnuson (3,200-meter run), sophomore Sarah Miville (3,200-meter run), junior Lauren Laszczak (high jump) and the boys' 4x800 meter relay team.

The Mountain View team also boasted numerous state winners, including senior Lee Gundy (800-meter run), freshman Kaitlynd Holland (800 meter run) and the girls' 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams.

In 4A-I, Canyon Del Oro senior Kala Stepter was state champion in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

Finishing earlier than track and baseball was tennis, and the Ironwood Ridge boys' team ended the season on April 28 with two state titles, one in team competition, and one for doubles partners, juniors Timothy Holten and Dillon Kennedy.
