Canyon Del Oro's softball team posted its 10th win in a row Friday, putting the Dorados in a position to sharpen their skills against quality foes as the season heads toward tourney play.

CDO, 21-4 overall and 5-0 in its conference, has Cienega and Sabino ahead.

Last Friday, the Flowing Wells Caballeros (7-19, 0-5) came into town and played airtight infield defense, but the Dorados won their 10th straight, 7-2.

Credit Kayla Bonstrom for keeping the Caballeros at arm's length.

Bonstrom pitched seven innings of five-hit, eight-strikeout ball, not allowing an earned run. She also stroked two doubles and scored two runs from her leadoff position.

Mattie Fowler, who singled in Bonstrom in the first inning, opened the third with a single. Katelin Vaughn singled home Fowler to give the Dorados a 3-0 lead.

Fowler had two singles and a triple in her first three at-bats, then flied out her last time up.

"Getting four hits would've been nice," Fowler said.

The Caballeros threatened in the fourth. When Alexis Garcia opened the inning with her second double, Flowing Wells seemed primed to score. Cleanup batter Ariana Assenmacher couldn't move the runner over, and struck out. Then, on a ground ball, Garcia was caught between bases and tagged out on a rundown play. After a walk, Bonstrom got a popup to end the inning.

The Dorados, who scored in each of the first five innings with two or more hits in each, got a one-out single by Amanda Miller. With two outs, Bonstrom doubled her in. Then, Fowler tripled for a 5-0 CDO lead.

"I think we could've scored more runs," Bonstrom said.

Without an RBI hit, the Dorados put it away with two more in the fifth.

Kerri Noland doubled. After advancing to third, Noland scored on a ball that got past the catcher.

With one out, Emily McSherry doubled. She stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Through five innings, Bonstrom had only allowed two balls to get hit to the outfield, and walked one.

The Caballeros finally scored in the sixth inning.

With one out, Garcia reached on an infield error. After another failed bunt attempt by the cleanup batter, Liz Mata walked. Then Ariel Caquias ripped a two-run double to break up the shutout to make it 7-2. Bonstrom fanned the next hitter to end the inning.

"I wasn't tired," Bonstrom said. "They (Flowing Wells) got better and adjusted. It happens."

Gearing up for a playoff run, Fowler sees room for improvement.

"We need to step up," Fowler said. "I'd like to see more intensity."

"Our defense has been solid all year. I feel good about the playoffs."

Coach Kelly Fowler expressed her goals going forward.

"We need to keep our practices up-tempo," coach Fowler said. "So far we've brought everything to the table. I stress that you play the way you practice."

Bonstrom sees the improvement in the 10-game winning streak.

"We've all gotten a lot better. I think we'll make a good run at state."
