The Ironwood Ridge 5A-II track and field season ended with another state championship for the girls. The boys finished in third place when a fall in the last race cost a title.

Steve Magnuson ended his remarkable season with state victories in the 800-meter, the 1,600-meter, and the 3,200-meter runs.

His winning times were 1:53.70, 4:12.40, and 9:36.66, respectively.

"The Magnuson era is done at Ironwood Ridge," said coach Gary Forrest. "What he did in two years was fantastic."

Junior Lauren Cooper captured school records in winning the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:07.85, and the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:14.06.

"The races were not even close," Forrest said. "She worked as hard as any girl runner I've ever had. As the year went on, it became apparent she was on a mission."

There were more state champions for the Nighthawks.

The 4-by-100 relay team of Adrian Brahler, Tyler Williams, Tyler Grammar and Trevor Wesley teamed up to prevail. Lauren Laszczak was the state champion high jumper with a leap of 5-4, while Cami Barbera won the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 1 inch.

Abby Barbera came in second in the 400 meters, while Katie Bradford finished second in the shot put.

"We're very pleased," Forrest said. "We set 13 school records this year. Last year, there were 18.

"I'm very proud of the boys and girls teams. It was a strong, cohesive unit. They supported each other."

There were standouts in 4A-I state competition for Canyon Del Oro, Marana and Mountain View.

Jaide Stepter of CDO won the girls 100 meters with a 14.70-second time, and she also captured the 300-meter hurdles in 44.40.

Teammate April Steward finished second in the 800 meters. Alkyri Wellington won the girls discus with a throw of 115-08. She also added a fifth-place finish in the shot put.

Josh Robbins won the boys high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches. He also had second-place finishes in the long jump and the triple jump for the Dorados.

Daniel Wong came in second in the 3,200-meter run, and he finished third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:23.79. David Catalano was third in the discus.

Lezo Urreiztieta was fourth in the 110 hurdles, while Gaizka Urreiztieta was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Freshman Mally McGarity of Marana finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 35-4. She was also fourth in the 100 hurdles. In the high jump, McGarity was third, while teammate Ali Yetter was fourth. Jamee Swan was fourth in the shot put. Lindsey Honea was fourth in the discus. On the boys side, Jaylon Hill was fourth in the discus throw.

Mountain View's relay teams excelled at state. The 4-by-800 relay team won a second straight state title for the Mountain Lions. The team consisted of Kaitlyn Holland, Jordan Davidson, Keri Lenihan and Emily Bartz. Mountain View was second in the 4-by-400, four seconds out of first, with the team of Holland, Davidson, Emily Bartz and Gretchen Bartz.

Holland was second in the 800 meters, and Emily Bartz took fourth.
