The Pima Community College softball team (20-14, 14-10 in conference) split a doubleheader at Yavapai College on Tuesday in Prescott as the Aztecs dropped a close one in the first game but took control in the second.

Down 2-1 in the 7th inning, Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) tied the game with an RBI single but Yavapai came back and scored a run in the bottom of the inning in Pima 3-2 loss. The Aztecs had tied it earlier in the game when Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning to make it 1-1. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) went the distance giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. She dropped to 8-11 on the year. She also scored a run and hit a double on offense. Corrie Ward (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) scored the other run as a pinch runner when Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS) got on base.

The Aztecs hit three homeruns in its 14-3 win in the second game. Pima scored six runs in the 3rd and 5th innings. Medina got it started in the 1st when she hit a 2-run homer to put the Aztecs up early. Medina also scored two runs and hit a double in the game.

Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) helped break up a tie ball game with her 2-run homer in the 3rd inning. She finished 2 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Ortiz helped put the game away in the 5th inning when she hit a 3-run homer. She went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) earned her 10th win of the season after giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play a doubleheader against Lamar Community College from Colorado on Thursday at the West Campus. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
