Lauren Laszczak won three events last Wednesday, highlighting a strong showing by the Ironwood Ridge girls track team in a tri-team meet with Flowing Wells and Marana at Marana High School.

The Nighthawks won with 87.5 points, the Tigers had 65.5, and the Caballeros finished third with 25.

The senior Laszczak captured the long jump, the triple jump, and the high jump last Wednesday. She is a two-time defending state champion.

"I'm ready for the triple and long jumps for state," Laszczak said. "Coach (Gary Forrest) told me I'm first at state for the long jump."

Laszczak may be confident, but she's not overconfident.

"I still have work to do at the high jump," she said.

Laszczak is setting goals leading up to state.

"I have high standards," Laszczak said. "I know I can get 5-6. Hopefully, I'll do really well at long, triple, and high jumps at state."

Even if she doesn't get a scholarship, Laszczak plans to walk on at Northern Arizona University.

Adrian Brahler continued his outstanding season for the Nighthawks, helping the boys tie Flowing Wells, 69-69.

Brahler won the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meters. He was also a key part of the winning 4x100 relay.

"I haven't been beat," Brahler said.

Brahler feels good about his chances at state, especially if he achieves a personal goal.

"My goal is to get under 11 seconds in the 100. I'm almost there. I got 11:03 in the past."

Brahler has a football scholarship to attend Pima Community College. "I might run track also," he said.

Ironwood junior Sarah Miville edged out classmate (and teammate) Emily Wilkinson to win the 1,600 with a 5:27. Wilkinson was the runner-up with a 5:36.

Miville is a five-time state champion in various events. Her versatility may be a benefit in other types of races.

"I'll do races that are not my events," Miville said. "It helps you to do better in other races. You can go faster at the last lap."

Miville still has another year to reach some of her personal goals.

"By my senior year, I want to break five in the mile. This year, or next year, I'll hit my goals."

Marana's strong second-place showing among the girls was led by freshman Mally McGarity, who won the 100-meter hurdles and the 300 meters.

Marana coach Matt Romanoski views senior Jake Pretzer as a competitor at state.

"Jake could be a state contender in the 300 hurdles," Romanoski said. "We'll have a better gauge after (racing) Mario Castro on April 23rd."

Pretzer finished second in the 300-meter hurdles versus Ironwood Ridge and Flowing Wells.

"I have a lot to work on," Pretzer admitted. "I got second at Casa Grande. If I continue to work on improving, I'll be OK at state."

What goals does he hope to achieve?

"I want to get down to the low 40s," Pretzer said.
