The volleyball team (14-14) lost in four sets (16-25, 25-17, 23-25, 17-25) to Scottsdale Community College on Friday in the Region I, Division II double elimination tournament at Glendale Community College. The No. 3 seeded Aztecs lost to Phoenix College on Thursday.
The Aztecs fell behind early in the first set and couldn’t catch up. They fell behind in the second set as well but a 5-0 run gave the Aztecs a 13-9 lead and they never trailed again to take the set. In the third set, Pima cut Scottsdale’s lead to 1 on a couple of occasions but that’s as close as they’d come. In the fourth set, Scottsdale broke open an 8-8 tie with a 5-0 run to help take the match.
Kami Humphrey (Canyon del Oro HS) finished with 36 assists, six kills and two blocks. Cheryl Montague (Academy of Tucson HS) had 10 kills while Kaylee Rakowski (Sahuarita HS) contributed with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Courtney Pitts (Catalina HS) closed out the match with 15 digs.
This was the first time the Aztecs reached the region tournament since 2008.
“To end the season this way definitely stings because you know you can play with the best,” Pima head coach Dan Bithell said. “But the overwhelming feeling I have is of pride. This team has worked hard, improved, fought for each other and persevered all season. I am so proud to have coached these girls through thick and thin.”
