Marana residents and neighbors are getting ready for the next big physical challenge, the Race for the River Duathlon.

The running / cycling competition is set for Sunday, March 1 at Marana Middle School.

According to Adelina Martin, Marana Parks and Recreation special events coordinator, the event consists of a three-mile run along the Santa Cruz River Trail, followed by a 16-mile loop to the west by bicycle, then finishing with another three-mile run.

Participants may race individually or in two-person teams, in which a runner competes in the first and third legs and his or her partner cycles the middle segment.

Competitors can enjoy food, drinks and raffle drawings following the race. All registrants receive a free T-shirt.

Registration deadline is this Friday, Feb. 20. People may sign up at the main Parks and Recreation office, 13251 North Lon Adams Road; at the Coachline Annex, 9190 North Coachline Boulevard; or online at Go to Parks and Recreation under the web site’s departments and select community events.

Those looking for a little push can join organized pre-race training sessions led by Blue Pants Racing. Call 382-1950 for more information.
