The quote, “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over” really describes the college football scene this past week as top ranked Kansas State and second ranked Oregon lost their first games of the season.

After ten consecutive wins for each team, they were predicted to advance to the highly coveted BCS National Championship game on January 7th. However, with only one game remaining in the regular season, both Kansas State and Oregon will most likely come up just short of their season dreams and goals.

For the Wildcats of Kansas State, it was the unranked Baylor Bears who shattered their title hopes with a 52-24 smacking. The Bears came into the game losing five of their last six games.

The Oregon Ducks came into their game hoping to clinch the Pac-12 North title, and left with a disappointing 17-14 overtime loss to thirteenth ranked Stanford.

So, who gains these top two rankings for at least the next week? The top seed will go to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish who are the only undefeated team left in college football with the exception of Ohio State who cannot go to a bowl game due to their punishment for recruiting violations last year. Behind them, the Alabama Crimson Tide find themselves poised for yet another championship.

After the top two seeds were hit with major upsets, it begs the re-occurring question of how the college football bowl system is formatted.

Year after year, we see national powerhouses dominate their season and conclude with one or two losses. In every sport, including professional football, a one or two loss season would mean a very good chance at reaching the championship. However, college football is unique and not in a good way.

As a result, the SEC (Southern Eastern Conference) which is known for having the best teams, has absolutely dominated college football. In fact, the last six championships have gone to an SEC team, leaving the Texas Longhorns undefeated 2005 season the last non-SEC title.

The reason and need for perfection comes down to the fact that there really aren’t any playoffs.

If you aren’t one of top two ranked teams by the end of the regular season, you essentially will not be able to reach the championship game.

The good news is that in 2014, college football will be implementing a four team playoff allowing the tops teams to battle for a championship spot. The bad news, the Kansas State Wildcats and the Oregon Ducks who were near perfect all season will not reach their goal of playing for the championship. Instead, it will be another year of an SEC team in the championship with the possibility of adding a seventh championship to the SEC.
