Former Ironwood Ridge multi-sport standout Jake Matthews made his first collegiate start on Friday, starting at linebacker for the University of Arizona in their 58-13 win over UNLV.
Matthews is a sophomore walk-on who was expected to play professional baseball, but instead chose to play football at Arizona and pay his own way for the first few years. He finished the game with three tackles, two of them solo.
The 6-3, 221 pounder played in eight games last season, mostly on special teams. He is listed on the Wildcats’ depth chart for the UTSA game as a co-first teamer with fellow sophomore DeAndre’ Miller. The two were designated the same way on the depth chart for the season opener.
Matthews was a key member of the Nighthawks' 2012 state championship team.
