SSA students complete a 5K for 9/11

What do elementary school students do on a Sunday? Some students at Sonoran Science Academy Elementary School compete in 5K races.

Under the guidance of physical education teacher Andrea Sonnenschein, members of the school’s Endurance Sports club recently competed in the 9/11 race, where they ran with firefighters, police officers, and men and women from the military.

Fifth-grade students AJ Alameda and Justin Adams were joined by fourth-graders Dayyaan Loonat and Troy Waters, third-grader Garrett Frazelle and first-grader Muhammad Loonat.

Their teacher reports it was a great experience for the students to complete their first endurance race by supporting members of the emergency services and military. The teachers were joined by Chris Atkins, SSA’s third-grade math and science teacher.

The school’s principal notes that while the school incorporates art, music, and PE into its curriculum, extra-curricular activities, such as the Endurance Sports Club, offer students a chance to challenge themselves.

The students will take on their next 5K challenge at Buckelew Farms in October.
