Giant grasshoppers patrolling overhead couldn’t pry blowouts from the Arizona Wildcats’ gloves on Saturday night — neither could they drive away Ironwood Ridge senior linebacker Jake Fischer.

The thoroughly recruited Nighthawk offered a “solid” verbal nod to Arizona coaches just prior to kickoff, when the Toledo Rockets still cradled hallucinations of victory.

Obscure as Fischer appeared along sidelines to the 50,939 fans — giddy with a 41-16 win that guaranteed everybody a free pair of Jack-in-the-Box tacos — anonymity’s not going to be long for his jersey.

Blog stars — and Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor — got busy comparing Fischer’s potential to ex-Wildcat Spencer Larsen, the two-year all-conference motor who landed a spot on the Denver Broncos’ roster this summer.

Fischer, who also starts as running back, roped 133 tackles last season, and says he’s raised the bar to 150 stops for this season’s encore.

His conversion to The Church of Sixth Street Bear Downs bridged a gap between the Wildcats’ $600,000-ante barbecue of the Rockets and a rough night for Northwest-side prep football.

Ironwood Ridge’s 10-6 season-opening loss to Pinnacle marked one of four Northwest-side drops on Friday night.

Marcos de Niza got the most for their gas money by throttling a disorganized Mountain View squad during their home opener, 55-0.

Though the occasional Mountain Lion helmet was thrown in frustration, a handful of players found the humor in being a young team tasked to perfect plays under fire and chuckled at the final tally.

Laughter is a survival skill, indeed.

Pusch Ridge fumbled its way into a 22-0 halftime deficit at home before shutting down Valley Union the rest of the way and notching a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, closing at 22-12.

Marana continued to struggle, as Santa Rita slammed them 37-0.

But the binary stars in Friday’s Northwestern sky came from Catalina Foothills and CDO. Both teams hung tires on their opponents — 61-0 against Rio Rico, and 28-0 on Sahuaro, respectively.
