IR grad earns national honors

Nick Carlson, a 2009 Ironwood Ridge graduate, was recognized on a national level last week after the American Football Coaches Association announced the 2011 NAIA All-American Team.

Carlson, who plays at Midland University earned All-American honors.

Carlson, who played in eight games at defensive back for the 2011 Midland squad, is the football program’s first All-American since 2000. He hauled in nine interceptions in the 2011 season, breaking a school record for interceptions in a season and finished with the most interceptions per game in the nation.

Colson is the son of Gene Carlson and Melissa Palomino.

Janis leads MV wrestlers

The Mountain View Wrestling Team competed in the Camp Verde Dual Tournament on Dec. 9 and Dec.10.

The Mountain Lions faired well with a dual record of 4-3. The tournament featured teams mostly from Northern Arizona.

Bailey Janis led the team at the 113-pound weight class. Bailey wrestled to a perfect 9-0 record during the tournament.

He beat the top-ranked wrestler in Division IV from Camp Verde in the championship match by a score of 12-8.

Five Mountain Lion wrestlers finished in the top eight: Bailey Janis took first place, Gavin Butler placed seventh at 126 pounds, Jake Wareham took fifth at 160 pounds, Jesse Martinez took fifth at 170 pounds and Ricky Alvarez placed fifth at 195 pounds.

“We came together and competed as a team this weekend,” said Coach Paul Ponce. “The competition and journey to Camp Verde brought the team closer together and will pay big dividends down the road."

The Mountain Lions will be hosting a dual tournament during the holiday break on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21.

It is expected to feature some of the top teams in the state.
