The Pima Community College cross-country teams competed in the Grand Canyon Invitational on Saturday at Estrella Mountain Park in Goodyear.
Anthony Spendlove (Flagstaff HS) finished the men’s 8-kilometer (5-mile) race in first place out of 57 runners. Spendlove finished with a time of 26 minutes, 52.1 seconds. He had a pace of 5:25. This was Spendlove’s first 1st place finish in any race.
“It feels great. I train a lot with hills so hills are my strong point,” Spendlove said. “In the beginning I stuck with the group and we had to go over a hill three times. I realized other teams were not doing as well. Me and a Grand Canyon guy got going. I tried to keep the same pace and everyone slowed down. I went free-speed on the downhill.”
The women’s team finished in third place with 81 points behind Grand Canyon University (26) and Arizona Christian University (59). Sarrah Boughan (Canyon del Oro HS) was the top finisher in the 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) race for the Aztecs. She finished in fifth place out of 57 runners with a time of 20:38.6. Three other Pima runners finished in the top 20. Shanice Alchesay (Alchesay HS) took 13th (21:05.0), Col’Bi Nez (Alchesay HS) was 15th (21:12.8) and Yaritza Ibarra (Catalina Magnet HS) finished 19th (21:19.5).
The Aztecs, ranked No. 7 in the country, beat out Mesa Community College, ranked No. 4 in the country. Mesa finished fourth in the team standings with 86 points.
The Aztecs will be in Mesa next Saturday for the Mesa CC Thunderbird Invitational.
