The 2010 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, which took place at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain last February, generated $1.013 million for youth charities in the Tucson area.

The announcement occurred on National Philanthropy Day, when the Tucson Conquistadores received an “Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser” award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Southern Arizona.

“(The) announcement illustrates exactly what ‘Together, anything’s possible’ means,” said Wade Dunagan, executive director of Accenture Match Play Championship. “With an incredibly engaged and supportive title sponsor in Accenture, a strong sales and volunteer force in the Tucson Conquistadores and the enthusiasm of the entire Tucson community, we are able to generate an impressive amount for local charities that will certainly make a positive impact on many children throughout Tucson. An event like the World Golf Championships—Accenture Match Play Championship is global in scope, but the difference the tournament can make in affecting lives is felt right here at home. My thanks and congratulations go out to Accenture, the Conquistadores, the fans, local businesses, staff and volunteers who make all of this possible.”

Since the Accenture Match Play Championship moved to Tucson in 2007, approximately $6.2 million has been raised for area charities as a result of the tournament, which annually brings together the world’s top 64 golfers in a unique head-to-head match-play competition. As part of the elite World Golf Championships, the $1.013 million from the 2010 event brings the total charitable contributions from the global series to $34.2 million since they began in 1999.

“Accenture is very pleased to work with the PGA Tour, the Tucson Conquistadores and the communities of Tucson and Marana to bring this world-class professional golf event to southern Arizona,” said Accenture chief marketing and communications officer Roxanne Taylor. “In addition to raising funds that support many worthwhile charitable organizations, the 2011 Accenture Match Play Championship promises to be an exciting sports event for the tens of thousands who have the opportunity to attend and millions of viewers who will watch the tournament on television around the world.”

The World Golf Championships—Accenture Match Play Championship partners with the Tucson Conquistadores to be the sales arm and charitable contribution beneficiary of the Accenture Match Play Championship. Proceeds from the Accenture Match Play Championship primarily benefit The Tucson Conquistadores charities, including The First Tee of Tucson, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA and Pima County Special Olympics. Since 1962, The Tucson Conquistadores have contributed more than $21 million to youth organizations.

“In these tough economic times, we are pleased with the charitable outcome of the Accenture Match Play Championship,” said Troy Little, president of The Tucson Conquistadores. “The Tucson Conquistadores work very hard to benefit the youth of Southern Arizona with engaging and healthy activities.”

The funds raised during the event are designated for The Tucson Conquistadores youth charities, including The First Tee of Tucson. With approximately 1,500 local youth participants, The First Tee of Tucson is a nonprofit organization that strives to promote sportsmanship, character development and life enhancing values to youth of all backgrounds, ages 5-17.

The 2011 Accenture Match Play Championship is scheduled for February 21-27 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain in Marana. England’s Ian Poulter is the defending champion. Fans can purchase tickets to the 2011 Accenture Match Play Championship by visiting www.worldgolfchampionships.com.
