It’s official: The keys to Canyon Del Oro’s incendiary attack are now in Doug Steele’s hands.

The senior quarterback led his Dorados to a 49-7 roast of Amphi last Friday and turned the corner on last year’s heartbreak title loss, completing seven of nine passes for 124 yards, with two touchdowns — one thrown, one rushed.

“I’m not the running quarterback like Dan (Nicholas) was, that’s for sure. But I think we’re starting to get the hang of it,” Steele said. “You see the scoreboard. We tore it up.”

Steele unloaded the ball to four different receivers, including senior Griffin Ronstadt, whose left sideline 45-yard spree set up their first score, a 25-yard Joey Webb dash.

“It’s definitely a fresh new year,” Steele said. “We just saw what we can do as a team — how explosive and powerful we are. And it’s pretty exciting.”

Despite the lopsided win, nothing’s golden yet, warned coach Pat Nugent.

“We’ve got a lot of talent, but we’ve got to get better up front,” Nugent said. ‘We made a few mistakes, but that’s what we’re going to build on.”
