Tucson-area swimmers may have just given the megalopolis to the west a huge inferiority complex.

Last Friday and Saturday, Southern Arizona athletes took state titles in every race in the Arizona 4A-I state championship meet in Mesa.

While Catalina Foothills was responsible for a large majority of the sweep, Northwest swimmers were more than happy to bring some glory home after a weekend near the capitol.

Canyon Del Oro senior Lauren Baker led the charge, finishing as Arizona's best in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, with times of 2.07:23 and 56.68, respectively.

Baker was also a lynchpin of CDO's 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams (second and third place overall) and one of the main reasons for the Dorados' finishing as Arizona's second-place girls' squad.

Another reason for CDO's success: senior Rachel Baumann.

Baumann finished third overall in the 50-yard freestyle, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle and had a hand in the success of both freestyle relay teams.

In addition to relying on a stellar performance from their seniors, the Dorados also saw solid contributions from their younger swimmers.

Sophomore Maggie McCord finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, and freshman Stephanie Strickland and sophomore Jessica McNamee placed seventh and eighth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The CDO boys' team finished the competition eighth, with another strong showing from underclassmen as an indicator that the Dorados have much to look forward to in upcoming years.

Sophomore Jordan Belton took third in the 100-yard freestyle and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Another sophomore, Sean Strickland, gave CDO a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, and freshman Jonathan Alexander placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Senior Tim Gort placed eighth in the 500 free and, alongside Strickland and Belton, helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a sixth-place finish.

Marana's boys' and girls' squads both finished in the 10th overall slot at the Kino Aquatics Center, giving the "Zoo" a reason to be excited for the present and future.

Senior Drew Hill was Marana's highest finisher, churning to a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Hill also placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle. For the boys, senior Ryan Gapp grabbed some much-needed points with a ninth place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Marana girls' top showing came with a strong performance and fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the members of that team also contributed well individually.

Junior Danielle Tolton took home a 12th-place finish in the 200-yard free, freshman Lindsie Jeffries ended the competition 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke and sophomore Brianne Murphy raced to 14th overall in the 100-yard butterfly.
