County offers plenty of summer activities

The Environmental Education division of Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation is offering the following upcoming events. For more information, call 615-7855 or email eeducation@pima.gov.

Summer Day Camp: Aquatic Adventures

July 12-15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pima County Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Road

Children ages 8-12 spend four days exploring a desert oasis, from the source of the water to its properties, quality and the countless life forms that depend upon it. Most mornings will be spent outdoors, with afternoons taking place in the Rose Cottage Education Center at. Join in the fun, use cool science equipment and do some artwork.

The fee is $60 per child. Registration required. Call for availability.

 

Agua Caliente Park Ranch House Gallery

Now through July 20, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pima County Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Road

View a tapestry of color landscapes of the Southwest by artist Bernita Barfield. Her paintings are done in oil and applied with a large palette knife expressionistic style.

Admission is free.

 

Tucson’s River of Words 2011 Youth Poetry and Art Traveling Exhibit

Now through July 19, hours vary

Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave.

See how local children express their understandings of watersheds and share their view of the natural world in this exhibition of award winning poetry and mixed media art.

Admission is free.

 

Camouflage – Hide and Seek in the Desert

Wednesday, July 6, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave.

Children ages 5-12 can learn that animals come in all sorts of colors, patterns and shapes that attract attention or may help them blend into their surroundings. A digital slide presentation will be followed by a series of engaging activities to learn how camouflage plays a role in animal survival.

Admission is free. Reservations are not required.

 

Wake Up with the Birds

July 7, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

Pima County Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Road

Desert meets water at this unique crossroads for migratory and resident birds. Spot wetland birds, hummingbirds, songbirds and raptors nestled among the mesquites and palm trees. Binoculars are available for use or bring your own.

Admission is free.

 

Orienteering

July 8 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Sam Lena-South Tucson Branch Library, 1607 S. Sixth Ave.

Learn how to use a compass to find your way through an orienteering course. Practice your compass skills combined with the use of a map to stay on track; a fun family activity.  For families with children ages 5-12.

Admission is free. Reservations are not required.

 

Sonoran Desert Kids Club: Hohokam & Cultural Resources

July 9 from 9:30 a.m. to noon

Pima County Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Road

Humans have lived in the vicinity of Agua Caliente Park for thousands of years and they left evidence behind that allows us to learn about their way of life. The SD Kids Club will visit an archeological site near Agua Caliente Park and examine artifacts. For children ages 8-12.

Admission is free. Reservations are required.

 

Wednesday Sonoran Desert Weedwackers

July 13 from 6 to 9 a.m.

Pima County Tucson Mountain Park at 2020 N. Kinney Road. Call for meeting location.

Join the Sonoran Desert Weedwackers and eradicate buffelgrass and fountain grass in Tucson Mountain Park. Work may require hiking and pulling buffelgrass on steep slopes. Meeting locations change frequently. For meeting location, call 615-7855 or email eeducation@pima.gov.

Admission is free. Reservations are recommended.

 

Venomous and Poisonous Animals of Arizona

July 13, from 11 a.m. to noon

Mount Lemmon Community Center, 12949 N. Sabino Canyon Pkwy., Mount Lemmon Learn about the biology and adaptations of some of Arizona’s amazing creatures including rattlesnakes, scorpions, and Gila monsters during this digital slide presentation. Reservations required.
